Abstract
This study was intended to investigate the pathological effect of Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) identified as a transdiagnostic cognitive vulnerability factor of psychopathology and its mitigation effect by choosing the pathology in depression. We examined whether RNT acts as a meditator in the process through which life events manifest depressive symptoms and mindfulness moderates the process via a moderated mediation model. 217 cyber university students were asked to complete the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ; Ehring, 2007) confirmed reliability and validity as a scale integrally measuring RNT, along with Life Experiences Survey, Beck Depression Inventory and Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. The analysis of moderated mediation effects is as follows. First, the effect of life events on depression was mediated by RNT. Second, the effect of RNT on depression varied depending on the level of mindfulness. Finally, the assumption of moderated mediation effects was supported by the fact that the higher the level of mindfulness, the lower the intensity of indirect effect that fosters life events to develop depression via RNT. Implications and limitations of this study are also discussed.
